Abstract
Due to the increasing spread of immersive virtual reality applications, such as adventure and sandbox games, good orientational skills in virtual worlds are also becoming more important. In this paper, we present a prototype to investigate orientational skills in VR in buildings and to test measures to improve orientational skills. In a small preliminary study, first tests with the prototype were carried out. As a result of the pre-test, the tendency was that a position determination in VR is possible and that test persons with better self-evaluated orientational ability in reality can also orientate themselves better in the virtual world. These tendencies are to be investigated in detail in a larger user study. Likewise, the insights gained with regard to measures to support orientation in VR, such as room design, windows with a view to the position of the sun and terrain features, are to be considered in the detailed user study.
