Abstract

Based on a qualitative analysis of five case studies, this paper explores the internationalisation processes of Austrian family firms, and in particular their reasons for going international, how these reasons change over time, and how the characteristics of family firms influence their internationalisation processes. In principal, our results illustrate that family-owned businesses rather go international upon entry of the second generation and for passive-reactive reasons. Moreover, the number of motives and the proactive reasons for internationalisation increase over time. A further finding is that the characteristics of family firms influence how the market is cultivated as well as the company's international development.
