Six PhD positions on AI-supported innovation in biomedical imaging started in March 2025 with a doc.funds.connect programme of the FWF at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences and the University of Salzburg. One of the six PhD positions is funded by the State of Salzburg.
State-of-the-art imaging technologies provide unprecedented insights into cellular processes and disease mechanisms. However, these innovations generate enormous amounts of data, the analysis of which requires highly specialised expertise. This is precisely where REVELA-TION comes in, a new doctoral programme jointly run by the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences and the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg. REVELATION sets new standards in interdisciplinary education and research and will contribute significantly to the development of future experts in science and industry. Building on the joint Master's degree programmes ‘Applied Image & Signal Processing’ and ‘Medical Biology’, six closely linked dissertations on key topics such as "Helicobacter pylori in carcinogenesis”, “Stainless cellular diagnostics” and “Transport pathways of extracellu-lar vesicles” will be developed as part of the programme. Five doctoral positions are funded by the FWF, one by the province of Salzburg.
The projects combine basic research with applied science and aim to advance both our under-standing of biological processes and the development of new therapeutic options. Research-ers from the fields of cell biology, microbiology, immunology, bio-imaging, computer vision and machine learning work closely together to develop innovative solutions together with the doc-toral students. The future doctoral students are intensively supervised by both institutions and can also gain valuable experience abroad and collaborate with leading international scientists and renowned companies during the programme. The aim of the programme is to train a new generation of interdisciplinary researchers who combine biomedicine and image analysis with the latest methods of artificial intelligence.
