Abstract
Optimised wood-based composites can be transformed into silicon infiltrated silicon carbide ceramics via carbonization and infiltration with molten silicon. Carbonization and silicon infiltration can be performed without distortion. It is demonstrated that microstructure and mechanical properties of the wood derived ceramic are comparable to those conventionally manufactured. The influence of the basic parameters particle size, bulk density and resin content on the production process and resulting ceramic material was systematically investigated. Based on these results optimised wood-based composites were developed and compared with conventional silicon carbide ceramics.
